Sabres post-game roundup

Unfortunately missed the game last night — was attending one of the excellent (no, that’s not a shameless plug) Fitzpatrick Institute lectures at Canisius College. They brought in civil rights leader Diane Nash and co-founder of the SNCC to speak about desegregating Nashville during the civil rights movement.

Cool stuff, no?

Back to hockey, though.

Some good stuff  from last night’s game — the Sabres snapped a four game skid with a shootout win over the always-tough New Jersey Devils. Seeing as they’ll be jockeying with New Jersey for playoff seeding in the top three, it’s a crucial win. Some game notes:

  • Jason Pominville actually scored in a shootout. Who saw that coming? Show of hands?
  • Ryan Miller registered 39 saves against a surprisingly lethal Devils offense. Scoring isn’t a trademark of Jacques Lemaire teams, but with players like Zajac, Parise, and the veteran Langenbrunner (on pace for yet another career year — my fantasy roster says thanks), you’re gonna put more than a few in the net.
  • Tim Connolly’s 16 game point tear was snapped last night, as Adam Mair tallied the only goal in regulation. Connolly has been absolutely lethal for the Sabres down the stretch after a disappointing first half, and climbed to a near point per game scoring clip.
  • Adam Mair, as mentioned before, tallied the only goal in regulation. It’s the second straight goal for the veteran forward, who was waived earlier in the season. He tallied his first of the year in Vancouver.
  • Toni Lydman and Steve Montador both sat out last night’s game, as Ruff opted to go with defenseman Andrej Sekera and Nathan Paetsch. Not too surprising, after their dismal performance on the western road trip – particularly since their pairing is largely to blame for blown games in San Jose and Vancouver.
  • Unfortunately, don’t have much other than that. The Sabres next play host to Boston Friday in a vital Northeast matchup.
