Kiprusoff to the Olympics, but only if he starts

flames

If the Finnish federation comes calling, Miikka Kiprusoff will be happy to backstop his country’s Olympic hopes in Vancouver.

But there is one catch.

He has no desire to be the team’s backup plan.

It’s starter or bust for the Calgary Flames netminder.

“Probably not going to go in that case,” a pensive Kiprusoff said. “If I’m not going to start, for sure I think I’m going to take that time off and rest.”

Worrying about rubbing people the wrong way with his words isn’t Kiprusoff’s style.

Neither is stressing about how his country’s hockey minds perceive his actions. When he was dealing with a sore hip in 2006, he chose not to go to Torino. The backlash built over time and left things a little awkward, with some questioning whether Kiprusoff was really hurt.

It will either be him or Backstrom. I don’t think team Finland will announce a starter before the games, I would think both Kiprusoff and Backstrom would split the first couple games then they would decide who is playing better.

If this is the case then I don’t think he will go to the games.
