Don’t look now but the Stars are streaking! (Sort of).

I’m probably speaking out of turn here and no doubt giving this thing the kiss of death but after home wins against the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes, the Stars now have only their second batch of consecutive wins this season.

Prayers for consistency from most Stars quarters seemed to go unheard throughout the course of this early season but there is one member at least of this current Stars roster who is not taking his situation lightly.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you: Marty Turco. Make a note of his name folks, this kid’s going to do well.

SURPRISE!!! It’s me!

While the rest of the team have been struggling for any real type of consistency, Turco has been quietly going about his business over the course of the last handful of games and bringing his season totals so far to 8-4-4 with an average of 2.26 goals per game and a save percentage of .919%.

Have a look at that compared with last season below:

33-31-10 record. 2.81 GAA and a laughable by his standards .898 Save%.

I like to look at random stats though which tend to be ones that don’t appear on mainstream sites or analysis. Like this;

Last season, Turco had a game winning percentage of 44.59%.

So far this season, Turco has a game winning percentage of a round 50%, easily a marked improvement.

It’s been well documented that Alex Auld was a big addition to this team where Turco is concerned. Tobias Stephan didn’t win himself too many fans when he was called on last term to fill in for the overused Turco but Auld has posted some positive results and numbers of his own. So is it the competition for the starting goalies’ job that’s making Marty play “the old way”? Is it the rest he can now be afforded?

Who knows. I’m not a sports psychologist and harbor no ambition to be. Whatever it is that’s given Marty Turco his beans this season though, I hope it continues. I hate hearing that he’s involved in trade rumors and the thought of having to play against him almost turns my stomach.

He’s getting a little more help from the men in front of him as well. Our D has stopped getting in his way and blocking his line of site with the puck, ultimately leaving Turco facing shots that present themselves like a beach ball.

Our forwards right now are pulling it together and Brad Richards in particular is looking better than anyone is giving him credit for. Altogether, everyone simply seems to be pulling in the same direction all of a sudden but make no mistake about this, Marty Turco is a huge difference maker for this team. When he plays well, Dallas do well. When he doesn’t, neither do his team.  Marty Turco is fast becoming the new Brenden Morrow for many Stars fans and the way he’s beginning to turn it around – it’s small wonder really.

St Louis are up next this Wednesday in a potential banana skin match. After starting brightly, the Blues find themselves in a bit of a hole with an 8-9-4 record and a serious point to prove. Looking forward to it!
