Bobby Ryan contract talks are stopped

Negotiations on a contract extension between the Ducks and winger Bobby Ryan have broken down and won’t resume in the immediate future, Ryan’s agent told the Register today in a phone conversation.

Mark Guy, who represents Ryan (center), confirmed an ESPN.com report over the weekend that the two sides did talk last month and exchanged proposals but are some distance apart in terms of an agreement.

“We have had some discussions and I think both sides kind of decided that we’re going to let things progress a little bit during the season and get a better picture of where things are going,” Guy said. “We made some proposals that we think were within what Bobby’s looking at but I think it became fairly clear that there were some discrepancies that we weren’t able to get past.”

Ryan is in the final year of his original entry-level contract and has nine goals and six assists for the Ducks this season. The 22-year-old sniper was a Calder Trophy finalist last season after scoring 31 goals and 57 points.

Guy wouldn’t discuss what his client is seeking and didn’t comment on how far the two sides were apart. But he denied that negotiations have been cut off for the remainder of the season as the report states.

“There’s always a chance that we can meet again,” he said. “We’re always open to discussing things. It’s just a matter of waiting a little while and seeing how things play out a little more.”

Rumblings are surfacing that the Ducks may possibly be using Ryan in trade talks.
