Is Paul Stastny overpaid?

Sure he is, at $6.6 million this season and for the next four seasons after that is an overpayment for a guy who will be in the 70-80 point range. That is a a very good season but at $6.6 your expected to do more. After the jump see Adrian Daters take on him.
Through 20 games, center Paul Stastny has four goals and 14 assists for the Avalanche. That’s nearly a point-a-game clip, and he’s Colorado’s leading scorer, so it’s not as if he has been invisible.
Yet the son of Hall of Famer Peter Stastny is in the first season of a five-year, $33 million contract extension, and this is Colorado’s first season after the retirement of Joe Sakic and a proverbial passing of the torch.
So it isn’t out of line to at least wonder: Shouldn’t Stastny be doing more, not only as a playmaker (his calling card), but also as a leader and a goal scorer?

Wearing the “C” in Colorado, being the #1 PP, PK and ES player, and well, doing what he does best – setting up plays, doesn’t warrant a 6.6 million dollar contract, so yes, overpayed is something you can state about stastny, but, he does deserve “top talent” money of sorts. $5 – $5.5 would be more reasonable, but it’s 20 games in and Paul has 18 points. I can see Paul, staying healthy, ending the season with 85 pts. In today’s league 85 pts at 6.6 isn’t too much of a HUGE overpayment.
the kid can play, and deserves big bucks, but yes, 6.6 might be a tad overboard.
They’re paying him as if he were a player like Ryan Getzlaf without having earned it — yet.
Not to say he won’t down the road.
