Flames complete effort defeats Rangers 3-1

Miika Kiprusoff was fantastic tonight through the first two periods. Kipper made several saves, including robbing Marian Gaborik and Chris Higgins in the first period. The Flames and Rangers were very physical. When the Flames play like this, they are successful. A solid first period by both teams. Girardi ties the game after Langkow opens the scoring. On another positive note, Dion Phaneuf is playing like a monster, hitting everything in sight. The period was filled with hits, but a very clean period with no penalties.
The thing I like about the Flames is they were very responsible in their own zone. They were back as a unit, filling the gaps, the forwards were helping out the defense. The goal for the Rangers was shot from the blue line. The goal seemed to have eyes. Kipper really had no chance in goal.
The second period was marred by penalties. The Flames had three powerplays, including a 5 on 3, which I admit was not good. They really never came close. They did score a goal on a 4 minute penalty by Kotalik and Iginla with a laser shot to take the lead. The Rangers had two chances on the powerplay but could not connect as Kipper was outstanding in the second period. The Flames were outshot 20-17 through the second period. The Flame penalty killing was pretty solid, but that might have something to do with some guy named Kipper. He made several saves, including so far three off Gaborik who is going to have nightmares from this game.
In the third period, the Flames start out slowly and take another penalty, and guess what? Gaborik is robbed again. I can imagine Gabby will not sleep tonight, having Kipper on his mind. Every time the Flames made a mistake, Kipper was there to make the save. Including another great save, this time off Prospal. Another note: the fans were really hard on Olli. He is really struggling, and the fans are letting him know it. My only complaint is that the Flames are really struggling to get the puck out of the zone. I love the way the Flames are playing in their zone. They are playing the system. Maybe they are getting it tonight. The Flames score on a perfect play on a 3 on 1 breakaway by Langkow, Dawes, and Bourque, with great passing to Bourque, who finishes it. A huge goal. The Rangers gave away too many passes, and the Flames had too many odd man rushes. Most complete game of the year by the Flames. Kipper makes 32 saves in the 3-1 victory.
Until next time, take care.
Randy.
