Rumors that Buffalo is talking to Colorado
Rumors going around that Buffalo is discussing dealing some of their defense for young forwards from Colorado.
Quick analysis of the plausibility of this:
– The Sabres have the following NHL defensemen: Rivet, Montador, Butler, Tallinder, Lydman, Sekera, Paetsch, and Myers. They can fit all of these into the roster after dealing Danny Paille, and Rivet, Montador, Butler, and Myers can safely be considered untouchable. It’s plausible that a blueliner is being shopped now that Myers is staying with Buffalo.
– Where this falls apart is the Sabres trying to acquire a “young speedy forward” for one of their blueliners. Buffalo has been moving toward drafting for size and physicality due to the glut of small skill forwards in their system like Nathan Gerbe and Tyler Ennis. The log-jam up front was so bad that they felt it necessary to move Danny Paille — why acquire another forward when you’re trying to move them out of the system?
It’s possible, but I think that it’s very unlikely. Both Colorado and Buffalo are winning. Why mess with a winning formula until you need to?

Yeah, but Colorado is winning is spite of Marek Svatos – again. He’s so unbelievably enigmatic that they’re probably thinking that this is the time to deal him and try to bolster that defense of theirs. Anderson can’t face 40 shots a game for much longer without burning out.
I find it very, very unlikely that Buffalo would want another NHL forward. I can see them possibly taking on a prospect, but definitely not an NHL forward.
They’re already clogged up front – so much so that NHL-ready forwards are stuck in Portland. If they need depth, it’s defensively (Paetsch has a one-way contract as I recall so I don’t think he can be reassigned to the AHL.)
