I’m very glad richie didn’t lead with his elbow, but unfortunately I think he’s gonna get suspended for this hit just for the fact that the NHL is really trying to cut down on the hits to the head and richie connected to booths head even tho it was with his shoulder

I was at this game. It was a clean hit. Very similar to the Scott Stevens hit on Eric Lindros.

  3. Connor says:

I’d bet that it gets a suspension.

horrible hit ! how was it not cheap ! wow you got to get your stuff straight bud ! if you were there you prob had nose bleeds hahaha cheapest hit i have ever seen the flyers were dirty all night pete debroer should have sent out his fighters really frustrated me! really sucks for the panthers he was there best player and i hope he is ok ! hes one of the new up comers and prob was going to play in the olympics for usa but prob not now ? i think richards should be suspended for the rest of the year and fined huge !!!

Horrible hit? pathers1996 is an idiot, keep your head up, don’t make a stupid drop pass while coming into anyone’s zone in the nhl. Richards never leaves his feet, doesn’t hit to the head, the elbow is tucked in. Richards shoulder goes off Booth’s shoulder then into the ridiculously stupid head of a man who thought he could play a professional sport like it was a shinny game. It hurt, and he got knocked the F out, even the UFC didn’t have a knockout like that tonight.

  6. dan says:

listen to holmgren he even said it wasnt a dirty hit, booth turned his head into richards, would have been shoulder on shoulder

  7. dan says:

panthers1996, i didnt know the panthers had any fighters to send out????

  8. dw says:

Let me begin by saying that I hope Booth is ok, and that those types of violent collisions are extremely. However, this is part of hockey, and for anyone that watches it with regularity, you would know three things pretty quickly: 1) Mike was perfectly aligned for a shoulder to shoulder hit until about 0.3 seconds before the hit occurs. Booth ducks which exposes his head. By this point, it’s took late 2) This clearly had a defensive and not malicious intent. Booth was trying to cut to the middle and Richards was tracking him the whole way. 3) Mike Richards is one of the classiest, old-style players of hockey in this game and he does NOT have a dirty reputation. This was simply a highly unfortunate result from what should have been a clean hit. There’s absolutely no way that Richards can change direction or reduce the speed of the impact once Booth drops his head. Watch this video more carefully before making judgements. This was a clean hit gone bad.

This is a MUCH better angle to observe everything I was talking about: http://www.flyersfancentral.com/2009/10/mike-richards-hits-david-booth/

  10. Curtis says:

Not surprised he was not suspended, just like Neil was not suspended a few years back when he hit Drury.

As much as this is a devastating hit nothing in the rulebook says it is illegal.

  11. dan says:

dw makes very good points, thank goodness he wasnt suspended

  12. Connor says:

I agree it was a clean hit, but still surprised there was no suspension.

The NHL all too often hands them out by reputation – both of the player and of the team – and Philly doesn’t exactly have the best reputation when it comes to this.

Reminds me a lot of Campbell’s hit on Umberger.

  13. Anthony says:

clean hit? i’m a Flyers fanatic and I think it was a “late” hit, but “clean” (if you can say a late hit is a clean hit) Richie was in stride, already looking to lay him out for having his head down when he had the puck.

unfortunately for richie, being the player he is, there was no letting up after the puck was gone.

i’m surprised he didn’t get at least a game out of it. but hey, better for Richie that he didn’t.

I hope Booth is ok, and doesn’t miss any significant amount of time. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP BOYS! these young players really need to learn to keep the head up. this is not the last time a hit like this is going to happen.

  14. gotcha says:

The NHL has to get serius about headshots. And whoever said he didn’t leave his feet, he shifted up on booth with one leg leaving the ice. If this was a non-bigstar type of player, automatic 5 games. This isn’t the same type of hit like Chris neil did. If the NHL isn’t going to award suspentions in a legit manner, then they should go back to the old rules. There are rumours flying around because Colin Campbell is gregory campbells father he is not allowed to rule. If he is employed by the league he should have some say.

Also how was there no penalty for the collision with Dvorak? For teams like Philly they should start taking money away from the salary cap since this isn’t the first time this has ever happened. I mean they just signed Emery and Pronger, what do you expect the mentality of the flyers is.

Richards is a great player but should atleast got suspended 3 or more game at the bare minimum.

  15. Danny says:

this is perfectly legal. richie was finishing his check and like someone said booth went into the hit and mike couldnt do anything about it. and he did not leave his feet. it was perfectly clean. i was surprised he didnt get a suspension and im a huge flyers fan. but its part of the game. get used to it. it was clean. he was already in trend to hitting booth and couldnt do anything about stopping because there was no time.

  16. chase says:

I’m not even a flyers fan and i know this hit was perfectly clean. one of the best hits of the year, unfortunately the guy got hurt but thats a huge part of the game and it’s slowly going away because players are afraid to get suspended. Thats not right its been part of the game for so long and these things happen, its unfortunate but they happen, it wont stop happening, players just have to remember in open ice or anywhere on the ice keep your head up or you will get hurt its not peewee anymore boys.
