Martin Brodeur one shutout behind Sawchuck
The decision was an easy one for Devils coach Jacques Lemaire.
Needing a victory at home, he started Martin Brodeur in goal Saturday night instead of backup Yann Danis.
“It was easy,” Lemaire said. “We have four days coming up where he can rest.”
Brodeur stopped all 26 Carolina Hurricanes shots in a 2-0 victory. The shutout was the 102nd of his career, one short of Terry Sawchuk’s NHL record.
“Marty was just great,” Lemaire said.
He reflected on moving closer to Sawchuk.
“It’s a hard one to figure out because you never know when the next one (is coming),” he said of the 102 shutouts. “I’m closer. If we get shutouts it means we get wins. It means everybody is happy. That’s the bottom line.”
