Joe Sakic’s career will go into the record books this way: 20 years, 1,378 NHL games, 1,641 points, two Stanley Cup championships, voted into 13 all-star games, one Olympic gold medal and a legacy of class and respect only a handful of players could ever approach or command.
Sakic, 40, will make his retirement official tomorrow at a press conference in Denver. It will come a week to the day after executive director Steve Yzerman put the name of the Colorado Avalanche centre on the 46-man short list for Canada’s 2010 Olympic hockey team – fuelling hope that Sakic, a native of Burnaby, B.C., might consider returning for a 21st NHL season, if only for the chance to play in the Games in his de facto hometown of Vancouver.
