Senators GM says trade is DEAD

from TFP

Senators GM Bryan Murray told the Ottawa Sun today that the pre-existing trade between his team and the Edmonton Oilers is dead.

The Senators had agreed to send Dany Heatley to the Oilers in exchange for Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid, if the superstar winger would waive his no-movement clause before 11:59pm ET last night.

Heatley, who met with Oilers GM Steve Tambellini, president Kevin Lowe and coach Pat Quinn last night, did not make decision regarding his clause, and as a result the Senators are now responsible for paying Heatley a $4 million bonus, due today.

“It’s different now,” Murray told the Sun. “I don’t know whether we will continue or not. During the day, I will talk to Steve Tambellini again. Very definitely it’s not the same deal it was yesterday.”

It should be noted that Heatley did not reject the trade; he simply wanted more time to review his options and ponder a future with the Oilers.

It’s believed Murray had also spoken to the New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks, among other clubs, about Heatley, and was under the impression that the Oilers were a team he could talk to.

“They told me the circumstances had changed and implied that I didn’t have permission to speak to Edmonton,” said Murray.

Murray also indicated that the best offer he received was from Edmonton.

“There were not a lot of teams that were interested in making an offer,” Murray said “In a couple of cases the offers were not very good and in one case they were insulting.”
