What is Bob Gainey thinking?
I think that is a fair question to ask over the last 48 hours.
Brian Gionta 5 years @ $25 million
A 4 time 20 goal scorer who had 1 big 48 goal year 4 seasons ago somehow he was able to get a $25 million dollar contract. Another very small player in Montreal who look like he will be a cap killing contract very soon.
Hal Gill 2 years @ $4.5 million
Certainly is not getting any faster or meaner, was arguably the worst d-man on the Pens in the playoffs amd for his size he meets to criteria on being a Canadien and being soft.
Mike Cammalleri – 5 years @ $30 million
Mike is another very small forward for the Canadiens, he is a very good player but a $6 million a season price tag is not what teams need right now with the cap about to drop.
Scott Gomez who makes $7.3 million a season for 5 more years
Once again another cap killing contract plus on top of that the Canadiens gave up Chris Higgins, arguably their best defense prospect Ryan McDonagh and a wild card in Russian Pavel Valentenko. Gomez does not help them in the size department as he is a very undersized 2nd line center making first line center money.
Jaroslav Spacek 3 years @ $11.1 million
A solid second pairing d-man that can play the #2 PP and PK but he is under sized (common theme) and is another soft Canadien d-man, plus he is 35 years old. Beginning next season this will be a cap killing contract.
So I ask again, what is Bob Gainey thinking handing out these massive long term deals worth huge amounts of money in a league that will see the salary cap go down.
Also might I add all these players are not first liners (well maybe Cammalleri is)
Thats just life in Montreal, we have to overpay to get the talent to come! as a die hard Habs fan im happy with the moves Bob’s made.. In Bob we trust!!
