Habs/Rangers trade

Chris Higgins is on his way home!

The Montreal Canadiens have traded Chris Higgins to the New York Rangers for Scott Gomez accoring to rds.ca.

As more breaks on this, and there is an English translation, and the trade is finalized, I will post down the full details and give my analysis on it.

Stay tuned…

*UPDATED*

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko and Doug Janik from the Montreal Canadiens.

Anthony’s Breakdown – Well, here you have it folks, the Montreal Canadiens have given away quite the exchange for Gomez. Sure, it seems now that the Rangers have made the exchange for pieces to replace the players they are going to send to Ottawa for Heatley (my opinion). Del Zotto – Callahan – Zherdev/Rozsival – NYR 1st 2010 to Ottawa for Heatley and Chris Neil’s rights??

The trade itself, is a loss, in my opinion for the Habs.  You get a long term deal in a Gomez, who is a small Center (something the Habs should of stayed away from).  Sure, I guess this was plan B since the deal for Vinny never worked out, but was this the right plan B?  A top line C position in Montreal, who will play with Gomez now?  Will this help Tanguay and Kovalev re-sign now?  Or will this make them want to walk further away?

Losing McDonagh was a huge piece to this deal, to lose on the Habs part.  It doesn’t make sense.  The Rangers were looking for a salary dump by moving Gomez and got a STEAL of a return.  I don’t know what Bob Gainey was thinking, but I’m sure Habs fans worldwide are ready to burn him at the steak. The Rangers got the better of the deal, for sure, however, might of moved the wrong player, and it was the wrong player for the Habs to acquire.

This is going to be a domino trade, so keep your eyes posted, and stay tuned further…

Gainey’s quote:

“We are extremely pleased to have acquired an impact centreman in Scott Gomez. He is an outstanding playmaker and an excellent skater. Having won the Stanley Cup twice with the New Jersey Devils, he brings a lot of playoff experience to our team. Scott is an elite player who will certainly contribute to the success of our team for years to come,” said Bob Gainey.

Really Bob? Many feel Gomez has his best years behind him?  I hope you are right!

I doubt the Rangers give up Callahan now. My best guess is they trade Roszival, Zherdev and McDonagh/Sanguinetti and a pick for Heatley.
