Get ready for the Don Cherry Movie

It was old-time hockey day at the Selkirk Recreation Complex yesterday when it took the place of minor-league rinks of the 1950s and ’60s as filming got underway for the TV biopic of Canadian hockey icon Don Cherry.

More than 400 volunteer extras decked out in their Sunday bests filled the stands around the retro-fit rink as crews shot scenes of pivotal games from Cherry’s playing days for Keep Your Head Up Kid: The Don Cherry Story.

Terry Gould, producer of the four-hour miniseries set to air on CBC next year, said filming in Manitoba is going well.

“Everyone is so into this,” Gould said. “It’s amazing how many hockey moms and dads we have on the crew.”
